I did not go out of my way to see this; but since I love Drew Barrymore, I couldn't totally pass it up.
Without Barrymore this would not make the grade. Silly plot, but interesting sub-plots. The finale jever about a big happy sigh. Trouble is, is that she's got to be 17 again, and that's never been kissed ratings that brings back all of those horrible moments from her high school days. But, and I say this as a middle aged guy, the jokes are spot on, it's endearing as heck and it boasts a quite marvellous turn from Barrymore. It's the sort of performance that could ratkngs up the most turgid of comedy movies. It's a threefold character portrayal of some depth and no little charm. She's well supported by the always likable Arquette, while notable turns also come from John C Reilly, the ever reliable Molly Shannon and Rtings Sobieski. Nothing remotely new here, but for some genuine laugh out loud comedy moments, a feel good factor soaring through the roof, a kick-ass soundtrack and Barrymore herself, this is more than recommended as a pick me up movie.

I'm sure every generation believes their batch of high school movies are the best, and I'm no exception.

The rub here is that Barrymore herself was and still is so hopeless a nerd that infiltrating the elite tier of the school's social strata becomes next to impossible without some drastic makeovers on her part. Actually, despite this almost hopelessly inane setup, much of the film has an energy and drive that at least keeps it interesting and there are a few hearty chuckles scattered about as Barrymore stumbles through her fish-out-of-water escapades with an aplomb and naive goodnaturedness that are truly infectious. In fact, it is Barrymore herself who makes the film watchable. She is utterly delightful in her bemused innocence, as she takes on this adolescent world of phony class values and sometimes vicious callousness. The film makes effective use of humorous character reaction shots as it races along quite quickly to its predictable upbeat conclusion. The film is least successful when it turns into a never been kissed ratings polemic against the evils of teenage snobbery, territory that is more than shopworn at this late date.

Their chemistry is very good though they are very different characters. They connect intellectually and it works very well for the movie.
I still feel like Vartan is a little drab at times but nothing that holds back the film. David Arquette is, surprisingly so, quite good as Barrymore's caring and popular brother who happens to have not made much of himself. He has a small role, definitely supporting but it click here is a good part for him and he adds something to the story. Him and Barrymore are terrific together. Supporting cast are all quite good including Molly Shannon who I find hopelessly irritating but this is a role that actually was okay for her, John C Reilly, Garry Marshall, Jeremy Jordan, Marley Shelton, Jordon Ladd and even Leelee Sobieski somehow pulls off an excruciatingly stereotypical and predictable character quite well.
If someone told me they hated this film I could sort of see were they were coming from. Although, I'm not sure what sort of expectations they had from it because you can read the back or watch a trailer and essentially know kissrd you're in for. Still, there just isn't a lot of depth here. This isn't a smart film but so what!! We need movies like this because they are simple fun and sweet and enjoyable for a little relaxation.
