Sometimes things that really have happened are far worse than anything one can dream up in their mind. This is a tale of abuse, manipulation, and complete and utter disregard for human suffering. Knnow one woman got off on the emotional and physical pain she could inflict on others - mainly her children and gokdreads closest to her. How she got away with this for so long is a mystery. I had to love her. The level of depravity and cruelty in this book is unsettling and hard to read at times. Shelly was nothing short of a monster. Be warned, there are many scenes which will be difficult for some goocreads read.
There are tales of horrific abuse. This was a well written, well-researched account of abuse. The author did a great job telling these sister's stories and chronicled their lives together living with their mother and when they were adults The jiss at the end of the tunnel, besides Shelly being brought to justice, was that the three sisters were able to move on, each in her own way. I understand that the author has had to cobble together, many different points of view and try to create a coherent timeline for the story, but if found it clunky and sadly lacking in depth.
Don't get me wrong, this is a truly tragic and mind boggling account of terrible goodreadd and my heart goes out to the victims. The strength and bond the sisters have retained is incredible. On the other hand, the terrible complicity and acts of A tragic story, but On the other hand, the yuo complicity and acts of the father seem to be minimised in comparison to Shelly's crimes. This isn't an investigative account, more of a first draft that has the potential to fill in so many blanks. I for one would have liked more information to explain why the police didn't act on the information received the first time, Shelly was never even questioned? The conclusion was pretty disappointing in so far as it left even more blanks. Nothing really was explained in any detail, they were arrested. She pled guilty but not guilty really? They went to jail. He gets out. Kids take him back into the fold, whilst Shelly is still in denial saying it's all a mistake.

Aug 07, angela rated it it was amazing. This was an intense book about mental, physical abuse and murder. A mother and wife who was a psychopathic, narcissistic, abusive, manipulating, murder. She tortured her children, manipulated everyone and should have been on death row, for what she did. It was sometimes hard to listen, awkward hearing what she would do her children and people who came to live with them. It was an excellent book, that brings to light, how crazy some people are. How lucky I am to have the family I do.
How these people kept it together and dealt with what was going on, is crazy, but I can see how it can happen, kinda. Everyone had no where else to go, or turn. It was definitely well written, I believe it was based on a true story. In fact the more I read the more depressed I became. I hate to think that people like Ms. Knotek —who never showed any remorse for her behavior— exist. But at least the daughters who survived the horrific abuse became closer and probably more loving to others after witnessing such tyrannical behavior from the person who should have loved them the most. But the more Hunter falls for Kaiven, the more he begins to feel like he's a fake, and the horror of the public knowing intimate details of his sex life begins to creep into his everyday life, threatening to upheaval in not only his relationships but with the band itself.
There's a ton to unpack in this book. Brought to the forefront are homophobia and racism, but there are sprinkles of bullying and how the media and the public treat queer celebrities and the roles they assign them. I loved all the reps and the discussions about racial profiling. Hunter and Kaiven's relationship starts out slow as they're trying to navigate their celerity status as well as their own anxieties. But their dates are made to attract the media and they aren't too many quiet moments here to see these two grow. I loved these two even without those moments and I would ship them any day of the week. I forgot their names often and they almost felt faceless to me. There were times where I thought it would go there and actually explore some dangerous and dubious things that happen in the industry but they were just there? Like that could have been used in a fun way, but instead feels cheap. I never quite knew if Kaivan was with Hunter because he actually liked Hunter or if it was to use him for exposure. At no point did I think that Hunter and Kaivan liked each other, other than a plot device. She hates it when we swear. I learned the f-word from my first hockey coach when I was eight years old. The context for his quote, there really was no context. Like okay, nobody was talking about that? A lot of the phrases and even the conversations that characters had with each other, came from left field.
As if Khorram wanted to talk about a specific thing and just threw it out there. I think every single character and their relationship was just exhausting. When it all blows up, it feels both contrived and expected, but the resolution feels so cheap and unearned. I felt myself just wanting to finish without really rooting for anything. Pacey was a real gent, ultimate book boyfriend he's now in my top 5! Due to a head injury, Pacey struggles with fear that his career may be at an end, and uses the trip as an escape of reality. Winnie has experienced a lot of trauma recently - the loss of her mother, a horrid breakup, and a unclear path for her future.
My heart went out for Winnie and the emotional and mental jnow her ex-boyfriend did on her, I could relate in so many ways but her constantly optimism and strength to bounce back was admirable. She truly was a relatable and likeable character. He always picked her up and corrected her when she was negative on herself, and he never allowed her to think she was anything less than worthy. Whilst they were secondary characters I became so invested in them, each one has their own unique story that I'm dying to read. It was a really enjoyable, easy read with lots of humour, steam, low angst and the most wonderful hockey players I've ever read.

Pacey freaking Lawes. You had no right. No right. This man was all sweet and charming one minute and then demanding she beg. I mean. I really loved the heroine. She was quirky and fun and really sweet. She had some understandable body issues but I felt like they were relatable. The humor, as always, had me laughing out loud while listening to the audio. The steam was phenomenal, and the build up of hou with this slow burn was torturous in the best way. The plot line was great. I loved the secondary plot lines and the grovel was amazing.

So when I heard there was a hockey series in the works? Sign me up! I loved this one from start to finish. We get a hilarious meet cute and a house full of hunky and funny hockey dudes. Pacey is book boyfriend hall-of-fame material, Winnie is sweet and funny and altogether endearing. I absolutely adore these two. And all of his teammates? Utterly fell in love with the first half of this book. The characters are amazing and wonderful, I loved all the guys and them together in any scene is ACES! Winnie is a gem and I truly enjoyed her character and her friends are something else especially the girl roommate. I like that she might not have had a plan and ok lets be honest that isn't good lol but she stuck to her guns and did what she needed to do.
It might not have Utterly fell in love with the first half of this book. It might not have turned out the way she intended, it turned out better. Adventure starts with intent and that is exactly what she got! Pacey is totally a heart stopper at the beginning of the book a gentleman a good guy, but something changed. Jealousy came out and instead of talking about it like the beginning of the book made me think he was that kind of guy the green eyed monster came out.
